Federal law requires that anyone planning to work as a Nursing Assistant in a skilled facility must complete required training, pass a state competency examination, and be placed on a state Nurse Aide Registry. Depending upon the state, a Nursing Assistant may be referred to as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA), a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) or other title.
